How can a human being experience time when the contact with the outsider world is fading away? An experimental documentary on isalation at old age.

Director

Marc Schmidt (1970) works as an independent director and location sound mixer of documentary films. After studies in filmtheory (Utrecht University) and media arts (Tilburg Art Academy), he initially worked as a sound engineer and video editor on a variety of film projects. He also directed a few short fiction films. But directing documentaries raised his interest, and gradually became his main occupation.

The role of social codes in our lifes is a recurrent theme in his work. Among his films are Schoolyard, a conceptual documentary about a schoolyard, filmed from his balcony and Bidcatcher, a visual impression of an auction, which won the prize for best documentary at the Tampere Filmfestival. Currently he is developing The Chimpanzee Complex, about the social process among traumatized chimpanzees.

Matthew’s Laws is a portrait of Marc Schmidt’s school friend Matthew and is so far his most personal film.

A group of trainee wrestlers spurred on by the energy of Salvatore Bellomo (age 60) trains relentlessly in the back room of a café in the Borinage district (former mining region in Belgium). Tarzan, the Gigolo, Andynamite, Priscilla, La Rage, Eddie Dark... they all dream of becoming professional wrestlers, like their teacher. Salvatore fought with top wrestlers for more than 30 years, particularly within the prestigious WWF.

Today, he has decided to bring his students to the U.S to follow the traces of his past. Waiting for the big day, they live out their passion together, sometimes taking foolish risks to satisfy the local audience and lay out their future.

Director

Xavier Séron

Filmmaker and scriptwriter, Xavier Seron was born in Brussels in 1975. After having studied law, he entered the Institut des Arts de Diffusion (High School of Art) in 2001. In 2005, Rien d’insoluble (Nothing Insoluble), his end of studies film, won many awards and was selected in more than fifty festivals around the world (among which the Venice Film Festival). In 2007 he wrote and directed, with Christophe Hermans, a fiction short film called Le Crabe (The Crab). The film was selected at the Premiers Plans Festival in Angers (France) and won various awards, including Best Film Prize at the Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Films (Belgium) as well as at the Tehran International Short Film Festival. In 2008, he collaborated in the writing of the documentary feature film Les Parents de Christophe Hermans (Christophe Herman’s parents) and co-wrote En compagnie de la poussière (Together with Dust), a short film from Jacques Molitor (selected at the Locarno festival). For Bouli Lanners he directed, with the help of the actor Jean-Jacques Rausin, L’Eldorado selon Jean-Jacques (Eldorado according to Jean-Jacques), the making-of of the film Eldorado. In 2010, he created an ethological and ethylic short film with Meryl Fortunat-Rossi called Mauvaise lune (Bad Moon). At the Brussels Short Film Festival, the film won the Audience award and the Best Actor award (for Jean-Jacques Rausin). Currently, Xavier is working on Je me tue à le dire (I’m killing myself telling it), his first fiction feature film, and Dreamcatcheurs, a documentary about Belgian wrestlers.

Cedric Bourgeois

The Age Of Death

A FILM BY CHRISTOPHER YATES & BENJAMIN COLAUX

the fragile reality of a group of miners daily life

Info

a documentary film by Christopher Yates & Benjamin Colaux, in coproduction with Playtime Films, supported by le centre du cinéma de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles et de VOO, le WIP and the Flanders Audiovisual Fund.

"The Age of death" follows five Potosí miners, ages 21 to 54,through the ghosts and legends that haunt them, revealing the fragility of man and his surroundings.

These men burrow every day through hellish mines, abandoning the majestic landscape of the Bolivian Andes for the mine's dark confinement. Their identities fade as they enter this obscure world full of history and ghosts. By taking time to observe the physical details and the tools that make mining work so palpable, we journey into a past handed down along generations of miners through the continuous repetition of a single physical gesture.

This film gets underneath the skin. It is a sensory journey through fears, dreams, legends and indigenous superstitions as they come up against the reality of daily life.

Between 1873 and 1934 the Red Star Line transported more than 2.7 million emigrants from Antwerp to New York. A story of drama, hope and confusion, failure and willpower.

Director

Daniel Cattier is a freelance film director. His aim is to tell stories linked with Africa. Through his mixed cultural and linguistic background, his father being Belgian and his mother Zimbabwean, the issue of identity is at the core of his interests. After completing the first cycle of a law degree, he read Politics and History at London University School of Oriental and African Studies. Prior to filmmaking he worked as a Reasearch and Campaign Assistant at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. He then moved into TV production by working as a Reasercher for documentaries produced for Channel 4, BBC and France 3. Beside his personal projects, he does storyboards and directs corporates, TV programmes as well as commercials.

Fabio Wuytack is a Belgian director who studied at Sint Lukas in Belgium and Manchester Metropolitan University. During his studies, he gained three master degrees: master in Audiovisual Arts (Brussel/Sint Lukas) – Specialisation: Film Direction Documentary, a post degree “Social inclusion through access to the media industries”-programma (Manchester Metropolitan University) and a pedagogical degree/Master in Audiovisual Arts (Ghent/Sint Lukas)
The focus of Fabio Wuytack's work lies in both socially and historically relevant subjects, as seen in several of his documentaries. Fabio has made several award-winning documentaries, such as his first movie Made In Italy that tells the story of a 100-year-old movie by the Lumière brothers, and Persona Non Grata, a journey through the life of Fabio's father: Frans Wuytack. His most recent project is Expecting, the story of a couple that escaped their homelands and fell in love and struggle to survive now that they are expecting a child. He is currently working on Red Star Line.
He does not limit his talents to the world of film, and explores the world of the arts as well as a sculptor, just like his father.
